UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab director PJ Liesch says homemade mosquito repellents made with citrus and oils lose their effect quickly and recommends using EPA-registered formulas or simple measures (like a fan) to keep mosquitoes away for outdoor events near Oshkosh.
