The Samples are an American rock band formed in Boulder, Colorado, in 1987, famously taking their name from the free food samples they relied on for sustenance during their early years. Led by singer-songwriter Sean Kelly, the group developed a signature sound often described as a blend of reggae-influenced rock, pop, and folk, frequently drawing comparisons to The Police and the Grateful Dead. Throughout the early 1990s, they became a staple of the college touring circuit and the burgeoning jam band scene, sharing stages with acts like Phish and Blues Traveler and headlining several H.O.R.D.E. tour shows.
