- ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin received a $250,000 social justice impact grant from Packers Give Back, officials announced Wednesday. The funds — set to support safe meeting spaces and expand mentoring for youth waiting over six months — will help the nonprofit shorten its waitlist. WTAQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UW-Oshkosh is celebrating America’s 250th birthday with America 250+ a series of public events including panel discussions, film screenings and drink sampling that began Wednesday, Feb. 19 and will continue through October. Students, staff and the public are invited to join the scheduled activities. FOX 11
- ➤ UW-Oshkosh’s ROTC program will transition from Army-run to Wisconsin Army National Guard control before fall, with weekly leadership training at Plamann Park through April 16 — the change follows a jump in enrollment to 53 students and improved transportation between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Green Bay. FOX 11
- ➤ Rescue pilot John Duffy, who earned his wings in Jan. 1960, recounted his Vietnam War experiences and a 1986 rescue mission during Thursday night’s EAA Speaker Series in Oshkosh — the next session is set for March 19 at 7 p.m. for both members and nonmembers. WBAY
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lake Winnebago has seen warmer weather melt its ice and force spearers to remove vehicle bridges & reposition shanties as the harvest nears its 90% quota. Officials note the 16-day sturgeon spearing season may end early if the trend continues. FOX 11
- ➤ The DNR confirmed that Lake Winnebago sturgeon numbers remained healthy with about 25,000 adult males and 15,000 adult females (a sign of a thriving ecosystem) during the spearing season. WTAQ
- ➤ Winnebago County relocated an osprey nest from a fairgrounds light pole to allow parking lot repairs and set up a custom nesting station at Community Park (local experts expect the birds to return this spring). WBAY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After a 90 day review, Faith Technologies opted not to buy the former UW Oshkosh Fox Cities campus, leaving Winnebago County to explore new uses for the 42 acre site that costs $900,000 a year. County Executive Gordon Hintz invites developers to submit proposals as alternatives are assessed. WTAQ

- ➤ On Feb. 19, the Assembly unanimously passed Gail's Law, which requires insurers to cover extra breast cancer screenings for women with dense breasts. The measure now heads to Gov. Tony Evers for his signature (named for Neenah native Gail Zeamer). Oshkosh Northwestern
