EDUCATION NEWS

  • After a narrow referendum vote, Oshkosh Area School District approved its $197.8 million facilities plan to consolidate schools. The plan will close South Park and Perry Tippler middle schools along with Roosevelt and Shapiro elementary schools, and construction will begin in 2026 — the new middle school set to open in 2028 without raising taxes.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • UW-Oshkosh named four finalists for its next chancellor: Robert Brinkmann, Amy Hietapelto, Manohar Singh, and Joe Whitehead. Next week the candidates will attend separate campus forums for students, faculty, staff and community members before a Special Regent Committee interviews them to recommend a successor for Chancellor Andrew Leavitt, who will step down on June 30.  WTAQ
  • UW-Oshkosh announced four finalists for its chancellor vacancy and will host open forums from April 7—10 at Reeve Memorial Union Theatre to let community members engage with the candidates. The new chancellor, set to replace Andrew Leavitt who resigned in October amid financial challenges and declining enrollment, is expected to be hired by the end of the month with a start in early summer.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • UW-Oshkosh has named four finalists for its next chancellor as Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman said a special regents committee chose Robert Brinkmann, Amy Hietapelto, Manohar Singh and Joe Whitehead from many candidates. The finalists will participate in campus forums next week so community members can engage before a candidate is recommended to the Board of Regents.  We Are Green Bay
  • State Superintendent Jill Underly won a second term after beating education consultant Brittany Kinser with 53% of the vote in the spring election; she will run the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) until June 2029, managing school funding and teacher licensing. In her first term, she changed test standards at teachers’ request and sought increased spending for special education that now awaits legislative approval.  Oshkosh Northwestern

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oshkosh voters passed a $197.8M school facilities referendum on Tuesday with 13,958 yes votes — the measure will fund a new middle school as part of a four-phase plan. Former Assembly leader Gordon Hintz won the county executive race with 30,832 votes — defeating incumbent Jon Doemel.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • City officials announced that starting Monday, April 7, the water filtration plant will replace its ozone system so chlorine will be used as the primary disinfectant, causing a stronger chlorine taste and smell while the work lasts a few weeks. They stressed that the water remains safe to drink and updates will be provided as the project continues.  We Are Green Bay
