COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two high schoolers from Oshkosh North have helped refurbish 30 bikes for local students at Red Elementary by working every Wednesday at the Community Bike Center since April. The program, which aims to give safe transportation to families, accepts bike donations at the Arts for Kids sign on Pearl Street.  WBAY
  • Groundfloor Democracy hosts Politics in the Park events, inviting residents to discuss local issues respectfully at a park next to Lake Winnebago. Organized by community members including Nikolas DeGroot, these nonpartisan gatherings occur twice weekly this spring and aim to foster real conversations in person + reduce digital isolation.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • Elementary students from Read Elementary School received bikes and helmets in a giveaway event organized by Oshkosh North juniors Caden Ames and Seamus Rutkowski in partnership with the Community Bike Program on Wednesday at Algoma United Methodist Church. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Oshkosh will hold two spring commencement ceremonies May 16 at Kolf Sports Center, with a 9 a.m. event for Nursing, Health Professions and STEM graduates and a 2 p.m. ceremony for Business, Arts and Public Affairs graduates + alumni and student speakers will share remarks.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • Oshkosh schools (2026) have set their end-of-year dates: UW-Oshkosh on May 15, Lourdes Academy on June 2, the local district on June 4, and Valley Christian on June 15. Families can plan ahead for summer by checking their school’s official communications.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • Students at Carl Traeger Elementary built a piece of history on Wednesday by signing a steel beam as part of a new four-classroom addition, which will be lifted above the ceiling to hold a record of the renovation. The project reflects a creative effort to involve the school community in its own transformation.  WBAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oshkosh Common Council approved the bike and pedestrian bridge over I-41 near Highway 21 at its meeting yesterday, funded mainly by a federal grant. The council also advanced plans to redevelop City Center and the Plan Commission will review the proposal next Tuesday.  FOX 11
  • Oshkosh Common Council approved Woodman’s plan to redevelop the Shops at Oshkosh, which will include a 272,182 sqft grocery store, gas station, car wash, and two commercial parcels on South Washburn Street. Woodman’s will return to the Plan Commission before construction starts in February.  Oshkosh Northwestern
  • UW Oshkosh Police warned students that a scam is circulating following last week’s Canvas breach — a reminder to verify official contacts — and advised not to engage with unsolicited messages. The alert comes as hackers claimed responsibility for the service disruption, urging caution when contacted.  WBAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The state Department of Health Services (DHS) said Wisconsin has no known hantavirus cases and that the risk to locals is low; it is preparing to support local health departments if travelers requiring monitoring arrive.  WBAY
  • Local hospitals face a surge in emergency blood use as the Community Blood Center’s supplies of platelets and Type O and A blood remain dangerously low. Donors are urgently needed, and appointments can be scheduled online - or by phone.  FOX 11
