- ➤ The Oshkosh Area School District will dedicate the new Merrill Memorial Corner on Oct. 17 at 11:30 a.m. at 108 W. New York Ave.—it honors the legacy of the former Merrill schools with reclaimed stone and brick and includes the new Vel Phillips Middle School track. Oshkosh Northwestern
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wisconsin DOT and state patrol warn drivers to slow down in work zones on I-41 as construction continues in Appleton and De Pere—encouraging safe driving to prevent crashes, injuries, and deaths. Officials also promoted the safety message with a billboard to remind commuters that speeding and distracted driving are dangerous. WBAY
- ➤ Winnebago County submitted its $238M budget proposal for 2026 ahead of schedule. The plan includes a small property tax increase adding $884,000 to lower the deficit from $8.5M to $7.2M and add 32 new human services jobs—public listening sessions continue with final talks in late October at the Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. - ➤ City of Oshkosh and International Association of Fire Fighters Local 316 union reached a tentative three year labor agreement retroactive to 2024 that gives firefighters a 3.5% raise for last year and promises 4.25% raises for 2025 and 2026. The union withdrew pending grievances and the city is planning a joint fire service with Algoma to address staffing challenges — officials say the deal comes after a year without a contract. - ➤ The Wisconsin DNR asks deer hunters to test their harvests for chronic wasting disease as bow season is underway and gun season starts in November. Hunters can use free self-service kiosks—at approved partners and meat processors—to help the state collect over 19,000 samples this fall. WBAY
