EDUCATION NEWS

  • A report from the Universities of Wisconsin shows enrollment is rising in nine of 13 campuses—UW-Green Bay is among the growing ones while UW-Oshkosh recorded a drop. The overall gain comes from a record 5.5% rise in new Wisconsin freshmen even as international student numbers fell by 7.6%.  WBAY
  • The Universities of Wisconsin reported fall enrollment reached 164,626 students—a record increase of 190 from last fall that marks the third year of growth as UW President Jay Rothman credited initiatives like Direct Admit Wisconsin for boosting freshman numbers. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Winnebago County board approved a resolution on Tuesday asking Gov. Evers to help cover SNAP costs—local officials noted that state funding obligations rose from 50% to 75% as monthly food assistance needs increased from 1,300 to over 2,800 families over four years.  WBAY
  • Actress Halle Berry supported a bipartisan bill on Oct. 21 that requires the Department of Health Services to develop materials on menopause and perimenopause symptoms and treatments. Lawmakers said her personal story of misdiagnosis helped push the effort—aimed at improving menopause education in the state.  Oshkosh Northwestern

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services urged parents to test kids for lead poisoning after nearly 5,000 cases were reported last year in homes with older paint—especially those built before 1978. The state now recommends a finger-stick blood test at ages 1 and 2 and a follow-up test between 3 and 5—warning that early lead exposure can harm a child’s growth and development.  WTAQ
